Ancient Cultures of Papua New Guinea & Northern Australia

16 days / 15 nights

Ancient Cultures of Papua New Guuinea & Northern Australia Map - copyright A&K In combination with Aboriginal Australia, visit Papua New Guinea, home to over 1,000 ethnic groups as isolated from each other by their island's rugged terrain as their island is from the world at large.

the A&K Advantage:

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: USA or Canada / Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea
Depart on an overnight flight.

Day 2: International Date Line
Cross the International Dateline and "lose" a day, to be regained on your return flight.

Day 3: Port Moresby / Mount Hagen
On arrival in Port Moresby, PNG's capital, connect with a flight to Mount Hagen, the wild frontier of Papua New Guinea's Highlands.
Rondon Ridge Lodge: D

Day 4: Mount Hagen / Tari
Board a flight to Tari, accessible only by air. The first outsiders to visit the Tari Basin - in the 1930s - found a spectacular diversity of tribal peoples living Stone Age lives, convinced that theirs was the only human society on earth. After a guided jungle trek, adjourn to your lodge in the Tari Gap, at 7,000 feet.
Ambua Lodge: B, L, D

Days 5 - 6: Tari
Two full days of adventure in the villages of the Huli Wigmen, one of the largest ethnic groups of the Southern Highlands. At each village, there are new opportunities to learn about Huli culture: watch a festive "sing sing" and a wedding ceremony, meet spirit doctors and see a sun dance.
Ambua Lodge: B, L, D

Day 7: Tari / Timbunke
Fly to Timbunke to connect with 'M/V Sepik Spirit,' an air-conditioned 18-passenger "floating lodge," for a three-night journey along the Sepik River.
'M/V Sepik Spirit': B, L, D

Days 8 - 9: Black-water Lakes and the Middle Sepik
Cruise along banks lined with large traditional villages, whose people are among the most creative and prolific artists in Papua New Guinea. Your experienced guide identifies local flora and fauna; explains village customs; and helps you select from the artwork available for purchase.
'M/V Sepik Spirit': B, L, D

Day 10: Karawari / Mount Hagen / Port Moresby
After disembarking 'M/V Sepik Spirit' at Karawari, board a flight to Mount Hagen, home region of the celebrated Asaro Mudmen. This afternoon, set out for Port Moresby and a last night in Papua New Guinea.
Airways Hotel: B

Day 11: Port Moresby / Cairns / Darwin
Fly south to Australia, to arrive in Cairns and embark on a train journey into the rainforest, with stunning views of the coastal plans to the Coral Sea. Aboard "Skyrail," the world's longest cableway, you glide just yards above the rainforest canopy, enjoying sights once "strictly for the birds" before descending to the forest floor for an alternate view of this unique World Heritage-listed environment. Then drive north to Hartley's Crocodile Farm for another close-up look at Australian wildlife, before boarding the afternoon flight brings you to Darwin.
Saville Park Suites: B

Day 12: Darwin / Arnhemland / Cobourg Peninsula
Fly from Darwin to Mount Borradaile in Arnhemland, for an exclusive day safari in the land of the Rainbow Serpent, a place to see evocative rock paintings, hear Aboriginal creation legends and learn about the tradition of the Dreamtime. Later today, fly to Seven Spirit Bay on the Cobourg Peninsula.
Seven Spirit Bay Lodge: B, L, D

Days 13 - 14: Cobourg Peninsula
The Arnhemland region, under Aboriginal protection, offers a unique setting for adventure: trek with your guide in search of wildlife, bird life, manta rays and other marine life.
Seven Spirit Bay Lodge: B, L, D

Day 15: Cobourg Peninsula / Darwin
Return to Darwin by air.
Saville Park Suites: B

Day 16: Darwin / USA or Canada
Board your flight back across the Pacific Ocean.
