Cruising in Canal du Midi by Barge

Alouette Barge

'Alouette,' a luxury product of Orient-Express Hotels, Trains & Cruises, travels the historic Canal du Midi between Carcassonne and Béziers - one of the most scenic barge routes in France. The two spacious cabins have a unique intercom system, and an open kitchen allows you to watch the chef at work preparing the gourmet meals. 'Alouette' is the perfect vessel for enjoying the beautiful unspoiled landscape of the Canal du Midi.

Day by Day Itinerary

Alouette Dine Sunday:
Meet at the Paris hotel chosen by the charter group and transfer to the rail station for your train to the south of France. Join 'Alouette' in Béziers for a champagne welcome and dinner.

Monday:
After breakfast, cruise to Capestang for an afternoon excursion to Oppidum d'Ensérune, an ancient hill town that is one of the region's most important archaeological sites. Occupied from the sixth century and expanded because of its strategic location, it served as a melting pot for the many civilizations that made southern France their home.

Tuesday:
This morning, take in the beauty of the Canal du Midi - a brilliant feat of engineering. The Canal's 328 locks, bridges, aqueducts and tunnels have scarcely changed in more than 300 years. Created in the 17th century by Pierre-Paul Riquet to join the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, the Canal is more than 140 miles long and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The picturesque villages along its banks have preserved their charm and, over the years, have prompted many artists to capture their beauty on canvas. After lunch, visit l'Abbaye de Fontfroide, a Cistercian monastery founded in the 11th century. Return to 'Alouette' by way of Château Auris for a wine tasting.

Wednesday:
Experience the wonderful covered market in Narbonne, a lively Mediterranean city and important center of wine production. Enjoy lunch at a local bistro near the market before returning to 'Alouette' for a leisurely afternoon cruise.

Thursday:
After breakfast, visit Minerve, an old village on a limestone cliff that dominates the vineyards below. The ruined castle, once a Cathar stronghold, was besieged and captured by Simon de Montfort in 1210. Stop at Peyriac-Minervois for a wine tasting before returning to 'Alouette' for lunch and a cruise to Trèbes.

Friday:
Visit Carcassonne, Europe's largest medieval fortress town, to admire the intricate fortifications. The Cathedral here is remarkable for its stained glass windows, fine statues and elegant transepts. Back on board the barge this evening, enjoy a memorable farewell dinner.

Saturday:
After breakfast, transfer to the rail station in Carcassone for your return trip to Paris, where your tour ends.

Note: This route is run in reverse on alternate weeks.
