'LA NOUVELLE ETOILE' begins her season in Holland, the land of windmills, chocolate and spectacular spring flowers. Captain Jan Meijer was born into a Dutch shipping family and is eager to share the wonders of his homeland waterways. He and his wife, Diana, offer a relaxing on-board atmosphere designed to delight even the most discerning traveller.
Meet in Amsterdam and transfer to 'La Nouvelle Etoile,' moored in the center of Haarlem on the River Spaarne. After a champagne welcome, enjoy a relaxing cruise to Zaandam before a gourmet dinner on board.
After breakfast, drive to the reconstructed village of Zaanse Schans to see a working windmill, then visit a clog maker and a cheese maker. The afternoon cruise is through the heart of Amsterdam, the capital of and largest city in Holland, continuing along the Amstel River to Ouderkerk. Stop at a vodka distillery for a special tour with the owner.
Enjoy an early excursion today to colorful Aalsmeer, the largest flower auction in the world. Millions of flowering bulbs and plants trade hands here every day, in an auction building containing more than 240 acres of floor space. Back on board 'La Nouvelle Etoile,' cruise to the cheese capital of Gouda. After lunch, visit a local cheese farm with time to shop or take in the city's architecture, including the remarkable 16th-century stained glass at St. Janskerk.
Cruise to Rotterdam this morning, continuing to the historic town of Delft, the epitome of an old-fashioned Dutch town with quaint shops and picturesque canals. Visit the pottery works where the town's famous porcelain is still painted by hand. After lunch, there is time at leisure to explore the old city center with its intricate tapestry of cobbled streets and charming pedestrian bridges.
A morning cruise past Leiden crosses the Brasemmer Lakes to Oude Wetering. Spend the afternoon at the magnificent Keukenhof Gardens, a famous 79-acre park containing millions of colorful flowers. One of the most photographed places in the world, Keukenhof - which is only open in the spring - is also home to the largest sculpture park in Holland.
Cruise back to Haarlem today to visit the Cruquius Museum, a historic pumping station that originally helped to drain Haarlemmermeer (Haarlem's Lake). Then explore the museum dedicated to Dutch portrait artist Frans Hals. This evening, 'La Nouvelle Etoile' hosts a special farewell dinner.
After breakfast, transfer back to Amsterdam where your tour ends.
