Meet at Hotel Sofitel Dijon La Cloche for transfer to 'L'Impressionniste,' moored in the port of Dijon. A champagne welcome awaits with time for a stroll in the town before dinner on board.
This morning, cruise along the enchanting canal with opportunities for walking or cycling along the towpath. After lunch, visit Clos de Vougeot, headquarters of the esteemed Chevaliers du Tastevin whose annual awards are prized by local Côte d'Or wineries. After a private tasting at the family-run Domaine Jafflin, rejoin the barge at its overnight mooring at Fleurey.
After breakfast, return to Dijon for a walking tour that includes the flamboyant Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy. Then set out on a leisurely afternoon cruise along the picturesque canal to Gissey.
Visit the handsome Château de Commarin this morning with its variety of architectural styles that include two 14th-century towers from the original feudal castle. After lunch, cruise past rolling hills and grazing white Charolais cattle to La Bussière-sur-Ouche - one of the most picturesque villages along the canal.
Thursday:
After an early morning cruise, tour the magnificent 12th-century Abbaye de la Bussière, set in 15 acres of landscaped parkland. Cruise to the canal summit today, 1,250 feet above sea level, crossing the Premier Cru vineyards to Escommes. Visit Beaune with its fascinating 15th-century Hôtel- Dieu charity hospital, now a museum. In addition to the period medical facilities on display, the hospital includes a stunning mural attributed to the Belgian master Roger van der Weyden. Then, return to 'L'Impressionniste' for the evening's farewell dinner.
