Alsace-Lorraine by Barge

Lorraine Barge

'Lorraine' cruises through the borderlands of Alsace-Lorraine, where the history, cuisine and character of eastern France mingle with the traditions of neighboring Germany. A journey through this rich region is a voyage of endless discovery.

Day by Day Itinerary

Lorraine Dining Room Saturday:
Meet in Nancy for transfer to Xouaxange where 'Lorraine' awaits. After a cocktail welcome, enjoy dinner on board.

Sunday:
After a breakfast cruise, visit a crystal workshop to see how the area's most famous products are fashioned by hand. After lunch back on board 'Lorraine,' cruise to Arzviller where a counter-balanced barge lift accomplishes the 150-foot drop in a matter of minutes, allowing barges to bypass the 17 locks that were used prior to 1969. Moor overnight at the fairy-tale town of Lutzelbourg.

Monday:
Enjoy a morning excursion to Sarrebourg to visit the Chapel des Cordelieres with its beautiful stained glass window, La Paix, created by Marc Chagall. In the afternoon, cruise to the bustling market town of Saverne with good opportunities for walking or cycling along the towpath that lines the cruise route.

Tuesday:
After breakfast, cruise to Hochfelden, passing several picturesque Alsatian villages. In the afternoon, visit a small local brasserie (brewery) to sample the excellent local beer.

Lorraine going thru a lock Wednesday:
This morning's cruise to Strasbourg, a city that is often called "the crossroads of Europe," offers additional walking or cycling opportunities along the towpath. After lunch, visit the "Petite France" district of Strasbourg and the remarkable Notre Dame Cathedral. There is time at leisure to explore Strasbourg before returning to 'Lorraine' for dinner this evening.

Thursday:
Cruise during breakfast with a morning excursion to Colmar. After a guided tour of the city center with its magnificent medieval and Renaissance buildings, there is free time to explore the shops and museums. Return to 'Lorraine' by way of the "route de vins" with a stop at a wine cellar in Riquewihr for a tasting. Rejoin 'Lorraine' at Krafft for a farewell dinner on board the barge.

Friday:
Return to Strasbourg where your tour ends.

Note: This route is run in reverse on alternate weeks.
