Umbria Walking
Into The Green Hills of Italy

Umbria To explore Umbria on foot is to travel with Backroads through a landscape living blissfully in the past. Though less visited than neighboring Tuscany, Umbria is no less rich in cultural and artistic tradition. The Romans, Etruscans and St. Francis of Assisi found a haven here, and with its breathtaking scenic beauty, it’s no wonder. Part of Umbria’s timeless appeal is its terrain - rocky peaks, emerald hills, verdant valleys, rolling vineyards and silvery olive orchards. And its gastronomy - tartufi (truffles), cinghiale (wild boar), strangozzi (Umbrian flat pasta) and Sagrantino wine. Is there a better time than the present to savor the past?

Itinerary

Backroads Umbria Walk Map Days 1 - 2: Montefalco
Gather in Perugia. Montefalco, the "balcony of Umbria," offers panoramic views of a countryside that is ours to explore on foot. Visit Bevagna, an unspoiled hamlet dating to the 1st century B.C., sheltering two of Umbria’s finest Romanesque churches. Enjoy a private cooking demonstration at Villa Pambuffetti.

Day 3: Spello
Stroll through Trevi, renowned for its cobbled streets of geometric patterns. At La Rocca, our friend Fabio Ciri prepares pasta del pellegrino for us, a "pilgrim’s picnic" similar to what medieval pilgrims ate as they journeyed to destinations such as Assisi. In Spello, admire beautiful frescoes tucked quietly away in small churches.

Days 4 - 6: Torgiano
Follow in the footsteps of St. Francis to Eremo di Caceri, his forested hermitage. Explore Assisi and its basilica with our knowledgeable local guide. Pass the afternoon in Torgiano, home of Umbria’s most notable vintages - A visit to Deruta - a medieval hamlet noted for producing majolica, Italy’s finest ceramics - is a must. Learn more about this beautiful glazed pottery with a visit to the centuries-old Grazia family studio.
