Day 1
Passengers are met at the Moscow airport and transferred to a five-star hotel for a one-night stay. Welcome reception and dinner this evening.
Day 2
Today we tour the classic sights of this 850-year-old capital city, including expansive Red Square with its imaginatively decorated St. Basil's Cathedral and the venerable Kremlin with its imperial palaces. This evening we depart aboard the Trans-Siberian Express private train.
Day 3
We spend the day in Kazan, the beautiful capital of Tartarstan on the Volga. Enjoy dinner on board the train as we depart for the Ural Mountains and the city of Ekaterinburg.
Day 4
We cross from Europe into Asia prior to our arrival at Ekaterinburg. Here the czar and his family were placed under house arrest for months before the Bolsheviks executed them in July of 1918.
Day 5
Today we stop in Novosibirsk, a Siberian town that grew into a city due to its position on the Trans-Siberian line. We visit the enourmous Opera House, Lenin Square and the Ob River, which flows 3,500 miles from its source to the Arctic.
Day 6
Enjoy a relaxing day onboard the train as we head east through the Sayan Mountains. If rail schedules permit, a short stop will be made in the city of Abakan.
Day 7
In 1636, Cossacks intent on collecting tribute from the resident Buryats built a fort at Bratsk near the confluene of the Angara and the Oka rivers northwest of Lake Baikal. The town remained a small provincial place with about 2,000 people until 1954, when the massive Bratsk dam project was begun.
Day 8
Severobaikalsk began in 1974 as a base camp for construction of the BAM (Baikal Aur Mainline) railroad line. Cleared from the virgin taiga on the north shore of Lake Baikal, the town was little more than a collection of tents, cabins and railroad cars at first. By 1980 it was declared a city, and today more than 30,000 people live in this remote place, surrounded on three sides by mountains, and on the other by Lake Baikal.
Day 9
Today we take the breath-taking 33 mile spiral bypass line that carried trains while the nine-mile Severomuysk tunnel was being built.
Please note: There is a possibility this route will no longer be operational by the time of our visit in which case we will pass through the newly opened 15.7 km long tunnel.
Day 10
The village of Novaya Chara is known to alpinists and climbers as a jumping-off place to the rocky peaks of the Koda Mountains. Gemologists know it as the namesake of the purple gemstone called charoite and the only region in the world where it can be found.
Day 11
Tynda hosts the headquarters of the BAM construction company. Seated at the crossroads of the BAM and branch of the main Trans-Siberian line, Tynda's life is tied to the railroad. One of the main sights in the city is the BAM museum, which contains exhibits and photos illustrating the construction of the railroad, as well as artifacts of the native Evenk people.
Day 12
Today we continue through the region of permafrost, where the frozen earth that lies two to five feet underground keeps the trees from growing much over the height of a person's head.
Day 13
Komsomolsk was planned and built in 1932 as a secret center for military industries. Its position on the Amur River, which is the border between Russia and China, and inland of the Tartar strait on the Pacific Ocean, made it a strategic spot to manufacture airplanes and submarines.
Day 14
As we arrive in Vladivostok, we can spot the obelisk marking the offical end of the Trans-Siberian line. Our city tour includes the principal military attractions of this once 'closed' Russian town. We transfer to a four-star hotel for one-night stay and our final farewell dinner.
Day 15
Breakfast in the hotel before transfers to the airport for international flight departures.
