Great South Pacific Express
Brisbane to Brisbane
3 days/2 nights
June 5 - 7, 2003
The Reef is at its best from late April through to October, the clear skies and moderate breezes offering perfect conditions for coral viewing, diving, swimming and fishing.
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park - Includes 98.5% of the reef (348,700 square kilometres), making it the largest marine park in the world. It was established in 1975 and has since been listed as a World Heritage site. The Park is divided into specific zones each of which allow different uses of the natural resources.
Airlie Beach and Whitsunday Coast - Captain James Cook sailed through the Whitsunday Islands in 1770 and proceeded to name the area after the day that he arrived.
The islands and coast are a symphony of lush bushland, white sand beaches, coral reef and teeming marine life. The Cedar Creek Falls are set in a beautiful and mountainous region on the edge of the Conway National Park. On a visit to a deserted pandanus-fringed beach you may catch a glimpse of wallabies and goannas.
Airlie Beach is a lively, cosmopolitan village where all the shops are located on or near the main street. Window shop or sit in the shade of an outdoor café sipping a cooling drink.
Considered to be one of the natural wonders of the world the Great Barrier Reef runs some 2,000 km (1,240 miles) along the country’s north-eastern coast. Made up of 2,500 separate reefs, it is the largest coral reef in the world. There are some 300 species of coral, ranging from the common blue and brown staghorns to incredibly intricate pink and purple sea fans, some of which resemble flowers. There is also a great variety of sea life including 4,000 types of shellfish and more than 2,000 species of fish, whose colours often rival those of the coral. The northern part of the Reef is home to one of the largest black marlin in the world, while the entire reef is abundant with game fish, reef sharks and rays.
