Great South Pacific Express
Sydney to Brisbane
5 days/4 nights
May 27 - 31, 2003

Just west of Sydney lies the Blue Mountains, a curtain that divides the populous, beach-fringed coastal plain from Australia’s notoriously flat, harsh interior. The distinctive blue haze which has earned the Blue Mountains its name is evident wherever one looks. Caused by scattered rays of light coming into contact with fine dust particles and droplets of oil dispersed from millions of eucalyptus trees.
The Blue Mountains National Park is the second largest in New South Wales and is a spectacular area of dramatic canyons and caves, sheer-cliffed valleys, pretty stone and timber towns. Its rugged valleys are well served by bushwalking tacks and picnic and camping spots.
The most famous town in the Blue Mountains, Katoomba, is perched on the edge of the Jamieson Valley and is home to Echo Point, the main lookout area for viewing the Three Sisters. Superb views look down into the Megalong Valley and across to the Ruined Castle. The scenic railway which shafts down into a tree-clad gorge is said to be the world’s steepest railway.
