Brisbane

brisbane Brisbane, named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, is now Australia’s third largest city with a population of 1.3 million. Situated on a river and surrounded by hills, the city has the intimate feel of a large country town. There is a mixture of hills, skyscrapers in the business centre and beautiful botanical gardens and parks. The quality of life is very good and it has an interesting combination of history, modernity and open space.

The city’s main commercial streets follow a grid pattern. Streets running north-east have feminine names, those running north-west, masculine. The Parliament buildings and the Botanic Gardens are nestled on the bend of the river at the top of the peninsula.

Places of Interest

City Hall Tower - The City Hall, built in 1930, is one of the biggest city halls in Australia.

Parliament House - Taking 24 years to build and completed in 1865, this building is an imposing example of French renaissance architecture.

Treasury Building - The finest example of Italian renaissance style in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Queensland Museum - Houses exhibits on marine life of the Great Barrier Reef and displays on Aboriginal customs and tools.

The Old Observatory and Windmill - One of Brisbane’s earliest buildings dating from 1829. Built by the convicts forced labour, it was originally designed as a windmill but the sails never worked, so it was converted to a convict-powered treadmill.

Queensland Cultural Centre - Incorporates a Performing Arts Complex, Art Gallery, Museum, Library and Restaurant.

The Botanic Gardens - Is one of many parks bordering the Brisbane River and consists of 20 hectares of flowers, shrubs and trees next to Parliament House.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary - One of Brisbane’s top attractions housing Australia’s largest colony, of about 100 koalas, on public display. The Sanctuary also houses wombats, emus, Tasmanian devils, platypuses and other Australian animals.

Brisbane is an ideal base from which to explore southern Queensland, and the best gateway to the attractions of northern Queensland. It is surrounded by some of Queensland’s major tourism destinations and there are plenty of options for day trips within an hour or two’s drive from the capital. The Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Lamington National Park and the islands of Moreton May are an easy drive from the city.
