Canberra

Canberra Canberra lies in the north-eastern quarter of the Australian Capital Territory, 2359 sq km of farmland and spectacular mountains, forests and valleys, and is the political, diplomatic and administrative capital of Australia.

The twin hubs of Capitol Hill and City Hill dominate Canberra and Lake Burley Griffin neatly divides Canberra in two. The shoreline of the lake extends for some 35km (22 miles). There are a number of places of interest around the lake. The Carillon, standing on Aspen Island connected to the shore by a footbridge, marks Canberra’s 50th Anniversary. It is one of the largest free-standing bell towers in the world and its 53 bells are either played by hand or automatically.

The Captain Cook Memorial Jet - Near the Commonwealth Avenue bridge, hurls a column of water 140 meters (460 feet) into the air. It is one of the world’s highest and at any one time there can be up to 6 tonnes of water "hanging". On the shore opposite the jet is a large metal globe on which are traced Cook’s three great voyages of discovery.

Parliament House - On Capitol Hill is described as a "building for the 21st century and beyond", and occupies a 32 hectare (80 acre) site landscaped with formal and informal gardens. The building was completed in 1988 to mark Australia’s Bicentenary and is open to the public.

Australian War Memorial Museum - Ranks among the world’s great national monuments. Sharply etched grandeur and dignity in its stylised Byzantine profile, contrast with a distinctively Australian setting among lawns and eucalypts, at the head of a wide ceremonial avenue, Anzac Parade.

The Australian National Gallery - Houses a superb art collection of Australian, Aboriginal, Asian and international works.

National Library - Is regarded by many as Canberra’s most elegant building. Not a public lending library, it provides services for other libraries and researchers. The foyer features three Aubussion tapestries and 16 coloured-glass windows by Australian artist Lenard French.

The National Science and Technology Centre - Is a joint project of Australia and Japan. The distinctive drum-shaped structure on the lake-shore specialises in "hands-on" science exhibitions.

Outside of the city, Lanyon is a pastoral property where natural beauty and history combine to make a place of national heritage significance. Occupied by Aborigines for millennia and by European pastoralists for over 150 years, sheep, cattle and horses still graze on the timbered hills of the Tidbinbilla range and fertile Murrumbidgee River plains. The station buildings of wood, stone, brick and galvanised iron are a record of continuity, adaptation and change.
