Sydney

Sydney The heart of New South Wales and some would even say Australia, is Sydney. Sydney is the largest city in Australia with a population of over 3.5 m people. The first settlement in Australia was made in Sydney Cove, now known as Circular Quay.

Geographically Sydney is divided by the harbour into north and south. The famous Sydney Harbour links these two areas. Most of the places of interest, including the city centre, are to the South of the harbour. Within minutes you can walk from Circular Quay to the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and Centrepoint Tower, Sydney’s best viewing spot. The North Shore can be reached by train or ferry across the beautiful harbour.

Places of Interest

Sydney has an astonishing variety of eating-places. Good restaurants are spread all over the metropolitan area.

The Rocks - An area under Sydney Harbour Bridge where Australia’s first European settlement was made and the true heart of Sydney. Visit Argyle Art Centre, Argyle Cut, Cadman’s Cottage, Argyle Tavern, Geological and Mining Museum.

Sydney Harbour Bridge - Sometimes called "The Coathanger" by Australians, the bridge was completed in 1932 at a cost of $20 million.

Sydney Opera House - The curving walls, reaching 67 metres, have become the international symbol of Australia. On Sundays there is free outdoor entertainment. The view from a ferry, however, is probably the best.

Sydney Tower - On top of the Centrepoint complex the 305 metre high tower provides the best bird’s-eye view of Sydney.

The Parks - The eastern section of Sydney centre is dominated by three beautiful parks – Hyde Park, The Domain and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

The Gallery - Situated in The Domain is the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and containing an excellent display of Australian, Aboriginal and international paintings. Museums include the Australian Museum and The Powerhouse Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in the Darling Harbour development.

Outside the city, places worth visiting are: Kings Cross (Sydney’s sin centre) has many good restaurants. Paddington a suburb of narrow streets lined with beautifully restored Victorian terrace houses and an excellent Saturday market, is 4km Southeast of Circular Quay. Taronga Park Zoo has one of the most attractive settings of any zoo in the world. Not to mention the beaches: Manly and Bondi among many.
