STYLE

OUR STYLE OF TRAVEL IS AS IMPORTANT AS OUR DESTINATIONS

the Taj Mahal TCS Expeditions offers a travel experience unlike any other. Since our first around-the-world program by private jet in 1995, TCS Expeditions has taken travelers to more than 60 countries, including some of the world’s most remote and exotic destinations. In addition to our private jet expeditions to Asia and the Near East, Africa, South America and Around the World, we operate private rail journeys across Central Asia following the Ancient Silk Road.

Private jet travel allows us to connect the highlights of each country and continent in safety and comfort. We fly directly to our destinations, bypassing busy airports, avoiding layovers and setting our own schedules. An experienced crew stays with us throughout each expedition.

Education is key to each expedition. A team of expert lecturers travels with us, providing first-hand experience and extensive knowledge of the regions we visit.

Superb staff makes it happen. Professional expedition leaders handle every detail, and an expedition physician travels with us providing excellent care anytime, anywhere.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Machu Picchu Distinguished Lecturers Enhance Our Experience

A team of expert lecturers travels with us. Combining first-hand experience and extensive knowledge of the regions we visit, they help create a rich context for each journey. Local officials and dignitaries meet with us at stops along the way, increasing the scope of our knowledge and awareness. Comprehensive destination notes and reading lists provide important pre-departure information. The lecturer team for each program is carefully selected to reflect a broad range of expertise and experience. Lecturers vary for each departure and are chosen from diverse fields, including art history, archaeology, anthropology, biology, economics, geology, geography and history. Lecturers who often participate in TCS Expeditions include:

Jack Daulton is a compelling lecturer on the art of non-Western civilizations for The Art Institute of Chicago. He has been a study leader on museum trips to more than 40 countries around the world and has accompanied many TCS Expeditions programs, sharing his insights and enthusiasm. His academic background has included study of the art and architecture associated with pre-Columbian cultures, as well as extensive study of Asian and African art. Mr. Daulton is a practicing attorney with a concentration in international law relating to preservation and conservation of the world's monuments. In a widely reported 1995 federal court case, he recovered a 1,000-year-old sculpture that had been stolen from a temple in Southeast Asia.

Charles Doherty is an art historian, lecturer and writer who has traveled widely throughout Asia. Following a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of London’s Courtauld Institute of Art, he completed a Ph.D. in art history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and returned to London to research and catalog the Guinness art collection. Dr. Doherty was invited by the National Endowment for the Humanities to participate in the “Art of Imperial China” postdoctoral program. In 1997 his Encyclopedia of Far Eastern Art was published, and he is currently working on a book about the scholar-artist gardens of Suzhou.

Scott Pearson has been studying economic change in developing countries for four decades. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Professor Pearson taught for two years in Nigeria with the Peace Corps before receiving an M.A. in international relations at Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University. In 1968 he began teaching economic development and international trade at the Food Research Institute, Stanford University. Professor Pearson has co-authored a dozen books, written numerous journal articles, won several awards for research and teaching, advised governments on food and agricultural policy and served for five years as Director of the Food Research Institute.

Great Barrier Reef Wayne Ranney is an earth scientist and an experienced geologic interpreter who has participated in many expeditions throughout the world. He is the author of three books: The Verde Valley: A Geological History; Canyon Country; and Sedona Through Time: Geology of the Red Rocks. An adjunct faculty member at Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona, Mr. Ranney can provide insights into how geologic events and climatic changes have shaped the landscape –- and the human history -– of the places we visit.

James D. Rosenthal, a former U.S. Ambassador, spent more than half of his 34-year career representing the U.S. State Department in Southeast Asia. He has served at the U.S. Embassy in Saigon; as a U.S. delegate to the Vietnam peace talks in Paris; as Chief of Staff of a mission to Hanoi in 1977 seeking resolution of the issue of Americans missing in action; and as Director of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia affairs in the State Department. In addition to his diplomatic duties, he taught political science and international relations at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Ambassador Rosenthal travels extensively and lectures and writes on current affairs.

Gilbert H. Sheinbaum, a veteran foreign service officer, spent almost two decades representing the U.S. State Department in Asia and Africa. His assignments included work in economic and information/cultural affairs, and socio-economic development in the Third World. Since retirement he has been a senior international consultant on scholarship programs, elections in Asian countries and several other programs. A popular lecturer, he shares insights from his first-hand experiences.

Ronald Wixman, professor of cultural geography at the University of Oregon, specializes in issues of ethnicity, religion, inter-ethnic and inter-cultural relations and cultural expression on the landscape. He has advised the U.S. Departments of State and Defense on issues of nationalism in the former U.S.S.R. and Yugoslavia, and has consulted with various government agencies on ethnic, religious and territorial disputes in Central Asia and Eastern and Central Europe. His lectures and discussions provide important historical and cultural insights into the peoples and places we visit.
